What the numbers show
Lesotho Tribune has the largest Facebook following in the latest counts, about 236,000, which is about 53,000 more than Public Eye in second place.
Public Eye, Lesotho Times and The Post are within 3% of each other, so small monthly changes can reorder them. Their places in the ranking should be read as a near tie.
The top three titles hold 66% of the combined Facebook following of the 7 newspapers counted. Readers often follow more than one page, so the combined figure overstates the number of distinct people.
The Post has the longest like-for-like record on file: its Facebook following grew from 111,000 in December 2024 to 181,000 in October 2026, a rise of 63%, or about 31% a year.
Facebook is the main platform for every title counted. Lesotho Tribune is the only title with a TikTok following in the tens of thousands. YouTube audiences are small: the largest is Lesotho Tribune with about 2,000 subscribers.
Data Matrix has published these counts since 13 October 2023. Counts from October 2023 to September 2026 are held in our archive and are available to buy; the charts mark that period. Growth on this page is calculated only between counts taken the same way, so the first full quarter of comparable growth shown here is Q4 2026.

Lesotho Tribune currently leads on the combination of Facebook scale and a notable TikTok presence, which no other newspaper on the list matches. Public Eye and The Post form the next clear tier. Below them, Lesotho Times sits close behind, with Maseru Metro, Informative, Sunday Express and Newsday making up the smaller tier.
For most of these titles, Facebook is the only platform with meaningful scale. YouTube is a weak spot across the group, and TikTok is growing but only Lesotho Tribune shows a following in the tens of thousands.
Why this indicator matters
Lesotho's newspapers print small runs and do not publish audited circulation, so print sales cannot be compared across titles. Social media following is the most consistent public measure of how many people a title can reach, and the only one that can be checked by anyone, on any day.
For advertisers it shows where a message is likely to be seen. For government, NGOs and businesses it shows which titles carry information furthest. For newsrooms it is a benchmark against their peers. The trend matters more than any single count: a title adding followers month after month is building an audience, while one that stalls may be losing readers to newer digital outlets.
What it does not measure
Followers are not readers. Many followers never see a given post, and many readers do not follow the page.
It does not measure engagement, trust or accuracy.
Audiences overlap. One person can follow several pages, so combined totals overstate the number of distinct people.
Counts can be lifted by paid promotion, giveaways or page mergers, and they include inactive accounts.
Platforms round large counts, for example 236K, so small differences between titles are within rounding.
Methodology and data availability
Each month a Data Matrix researcher records the follower count shown on every newspaper's public Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X and Instagram page, with the date it was read. The quarterly ranking uses the last Facebook count in the quarter and is checked by an editor before it is published. Data Matrix has published these counts since 13 October 2023. Counts from October 2023 to September 2026 are held in the Data Matrix archive and are available to buy. A few points in that period come from dated public copies of the pages held by the Wayback Machine.
Follower counts are never back-cast or modelled. Growth is calculated only between counts taken the same way, and never against the compiled Q3 2026 figures. See the research methodology for the meaning of each label.
